Lung and Immune Health - Breathe Easy

Image
The Sonoma, Napa, Santa Rosa and Mendocino fires have brought us all to our knees in despair for lives lost, properties destroyed and individuals and households displaced.  Yet the heroic response of firefighters, police and first responders, as well as the outpouring of human kindness locally and in neighboring communities buoys our hope and spirit.  The Lakota phrase, Mitakuye Oyasin, which translates to "We are all related." runs through my mind like a mantra.   Donations dominated our social media feeds for days on end.  We live in an incredibly beautiful place with incredibly generous people.

In the aftermath, please take special care of your lungs and immune system.  I recommend and am using the following products:
Liposomal Glutathione - 2 pumps, 2-3 times/day, for supporting antioxidant pathways:  https://balancerestored.ehealthpro.com/products/liposomal-glutathione
Liposomal Vitamin C - 1 teaspoon once/day to boost immunity:  https://balancerestored.ehealthpro.com/…

Menopause - "Seven Dwarves" of symptoms as seen through Chinese Medicine

Image
I was reading a post in which the author referenced Suzanne Sommers’ book, “The Sexy Years”, in which she renamed the Seven Dwarves of Menopause:Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated, Forgetful, and All Dried Up!Although it was funny thirteen years ago, at that time the concept was remote to my experience.Having since personally met each of those little elves during my adventures with menopause, I laughed a bit harder than I had upon first learning their names.
In Traditional Chinese, menopause marks the final 7-year stage of a woman’s life. The Classics describe the phases of a woman’s life in periods of 7 year (and a man’s in periods of 8 years).By the 7th iteration of 7-year cycles, a woman’s Essence, the fluid-rich substances that infuses her life, has depleted to the point where she is no longer fertile.Essence is a Yin substance ~ the Water aspect of our bodies that is cooling and moistening.Yang represents activity of physiology, {think of heart pumping, temperature-regulating …

Preventing Cognitive Decline

Image
I’ve had the good fortune to attend several trainings with Dr. Dale Bredesen on his research and solutions to preventing cognitive decline.  Dr. Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.  He held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA and the University of California, San Diego.  Dr. Bredesen directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before joining the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding President and CEO.  With 27 years’ research in the field of Alzheimer’s Disease, he has designed a protocol to prevent or reverse signs of early to moderate cognitive decline.

A few “take-aways” include these simple lifestyle changes that yield profound results: Eat a diet high in organic, locally-grown vegetables, clean sources of protein, and proper hydration (one equation is to take your body weight in pounds, divide by 2, and have that amount of water in fluid ounces each day.  Note, that is water ~ not…

Enjoy the Flavors

On March 5, 2017, a day whose wild weather poured sun, rain, hail, rainbows and fog within a span of several hours, we lost a cherished friend in our acupuncture community.  Ray Rubio finished his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, crossing over to the Great Next with courage and dignity.  He is now free from the pain and suffering of this earthly dwelling, leaving two beautiful children and a legacy within our profession that will continue in his honor.  While life goes on, it goes on just a little dimmer, for his brightness is sorely missed.

Ray was a force of nature…his never-ending supply of ideas, teachings and the most infectious laugh ever were a gift to those who knew him.   He founded the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, which organization has introduced me to latter-day luminaries in the field of Traditional Chinese medicine for infertility, pregnancy, post-partum and menopause, as well as experts in the field of male reproductive health.

He was also a wis…

The Art of Hiding and the Timing of Revealing

Image
I’ve been attempting to write this blog for months now, and have been busy berating myself for not getting it done…all the while flummoxed at what the heck was keeping me in hiding on this project?  Then, in divine timing, I participated in a conference call with some fellow acupuncturists, a group of fertility experts who are dedicated to deepening our own experience with the Tao, from which Chinese Medicine was derived.  The topic of our conversation was to recognize the value and importance of hiding, where and when we each do so in our daily lives, and whether it was in service to our highest good.  Our teacher, Randine Lewis, is a lifelong student of the ancient classics of Chinese Taoist philosophy and Chinese medicine.  She shared a beautiful poem by David Whyte entitled “Hiding”.  One line that struck me with validation was “Hiding done properly is the internal faithful promise for a proper future emergence, as embryos, as children or even as emerging adults in retreat from th…
